Back in the days when I was "religious", we took up short courses on Theology. I loved it. Because of it, I was able to read the bible from cover to cover. And appreciate my being Catholic a whole lot more.
There was this one course which ran on and off for a few years. It was called "Theology at the Movies". It was taught by Ton Sison, a brother in community who wrote the screenplay
Nine Mornings (a movie which starred Piolo Pascual and Donita Rose). Because of the course, I not only learned to appreciate foreign films, I also learned how to look for the Christ-figure in each movie. And you also learn to look for symbols, that will prepare you for the next significant event. The protagonist, is the character that affects the change in the other characters in the movie. He or she might not be very obvious, might not even be angelic, popular or seen. But you will be able to witness his/her birth, suffering, death and resurrection. The Christ-figure. He/she will be the most important charater in the story. And for every story, there will always be a lesson. Except if you're watching a Cohen brothers film LOL.
As part of the course, we were made to list out top ten movies and read them out to class. I lost all my notes in the flood, including my list. But I can still remember Schindler's List, Steel Magnolias, Magnolia and Shawshank Redmption as part of that list. I haven't made a list in a long time so I decided to last night. I can only remember the most recent ones I've seen. Not my top, but still they will be at the top. Should you get a chance to see them, please do:
